Did any of these thoughts resonate with you? Reiki may be a wonderful source of healing for you.
Here’s how we got started…
My client laid down and closed her eyes, and I laid my hands on the crown of her head. The first few minutes went as usual, with both of us settling into the practice: fidgeting, adjusting, getting comfortable.
After a few minutes, I felt my attention begin to shift from being very “think-y” to quiet, slow, and undulating. That’s always how it feels when I begin to connect. My conscious, analytical thoughts that zap from one to the next like pinballs just kind of fade away, and I start to feel “float-y” and open.
As we sank into the session…
The colors started to appear. Our energy had connected and universal healing energy was flowing. First, waves of pink slid across the window panes, one after another… slowly, calmly, and beautifully. Then, a rectangle of electric green emerged straight ahead. I watched as the green rectangle pulsed in and out many times… then shifted to fuchsia. The fuchsia rectangle pulsed several times, slowly and calmly, then transitioned to royal blue.
This pattern repeated until it was time to move my hands to my client’s forehead. I felt tingles in my hands and a mild wave of sensation that started in my right hand and traveled up my arm to my shoulder. I could feel heaviness in my chest and my breath felt shallow. With each new placement of my hands, my sensory experience shifted, as I tapped into another element of my client’s energy.
When the Reiki session was complete…
My client opened her eyes and took a deep breath, sitting up slowly. She shared with me that she had seen flashing lights behind her eyelids. She had experienced heaviness in her chest. She had felt pins and needles in her hands and a number of other sensations. She had seen colors, too, and she wondered what they meant. She had seen faces in her mind’s eye of people she hadn’t met in this life.
We talked about our shared experience for a few minutes; and then we said our goodbyes, excited for the prospective shifts in her experience and looking forward to the next session.
Reiki lets us tap into something greater…
This is what a Reiki session often looks like, with variations from person to person. There’s this feeling of disconnection from time and space, as if we’ve tapped into something larger that transcends the clocks and physical structures in which we live our days.
There’s something so profound about experiencing this with another person, and there is nothing else like it in the world.
There can be a sense of comfort in the lack of words that can be put to the experience. Clients often feel as though they have an understanding or shift that they can’t quite describe; English just scratches the surface of the human experience, and there are some things that we feel and know that we simply can’t put into words.
It’s ok… you can think and even say what you might be thinking.
You might’ve gotten to this point on this page and been thinking to yourself, “That sounds like some bullsh*it!” I get it.
I’m a science nerd, too; and the more ethereal, “unexplainable” explanations can feel really thin and not real. I often need a scientific perspective to help me understand this kind of thing in the context of the tangible world that is more familiar to me.
Enter quantum physics. Below are a few resources about quantum physics and Reiki research that have helped me understand how we are able to connect energetically in the way that makes Reiki effective and actually real:
